Doing Business Overseas - Etiquette Tips PDF Print E-mail
The growth of the Internet & the global marketplace means that many of us are attracting customers from outside our usual geographical boundaries.

But how are you greeting this prospective audience?

What better way to target your overseas customers than by offering to deal with them in their own language?  Do you remember how relieved you were when your German colleague spoke to you in English?

This competitive advantage can be easily eroded if your choice of translation is not effective.  We all know the horror stories with regards to foreign language translations that have backfired on even large multinational companies in the past, like the car that no self-respecting Spaniard would buy – the Vauxhall Nova, meaning ‘Don’t go’ in Spanish.

Ruth Partington, Managing Director of RP Translate, comments: ‘Translation is more than just direct interpretation of words. It is also about interpreting culture in order to make something fully understood.  These are our 5 handy tips for dealing with overseas clients to help make your international ventures a success’

1.             In Germany you should always put your jacket ON at the start of a meeting

2.             In France a single light handshake is the most appropriate business greeting

3.             In Japan always ensure that you are early for meetings.  The earlier you are, the better, and the more ‘face’ you gain – on average ½ hour early is the recommendation

4.             In the Middle East and Turkey you should expect to sip tea and chat before you do business.  Don’t be impatient – a deal could be lost at this stage even before talking shop

5.             In Poland, it is impolite to use too much sugar in your tea or coffee – two spoons max!
